Yuga Labs announced Friday that it hired Spencer Tucker as the company’s first-ever chief gaming officer to oversee its Web3 gaming initiatives and the Otherside Metaverse.

On Friday, Yuga Labs announced that it had hired Spencer Tucker as its first-ever chief gaming officer. The position is new, and it is Yuga Labs’ way of expanding its C-suite team to fill specific roles in the company.

Tucker will spearhead the company’s Web3 gaming initiatives as chief gaming officer (CGO). In particular, he will supervise the development of such gaming projects, and his first order of business is the Otherside Metaverse, Yuga Labs’ ambitious interoperable Metaverse project.

It will be remembered that in April this year, Yuga Labs rocked the entire Metaverse when it launched the Otherside Metaverse. The Otherside made waves on the Ethereum network, raking in a considerable surge of transactions resulting in $561 million worth of NFT land sales in just 24 hours. However, the downside to that minting was it caused an Ethereum gas war.

Getting to Know Yuga Labs’ CGO

Tucker is joining Yuga Labs with nearly two decades of experience in the gaming industry tucked in his belt. He was the President of Games at Scopely and Senior Vice President of Products at Gree International Entertainment, both mobile gaming companies. Tucker’s specializations are game development, design, user-generated content, Web3, and creative community involvement.

On his LinkedIn page, Tucker said he was “super stoked” to be part of Yuga Labs. “I believe the future of gaming will be powered by player ownership, social collaboration, and creative expression,” Tucker wrote on LinkedIn.

“Web3 is revolutionizing gaming, entertainment, and community in much the same way the shift to mobile revolutionized communication,” said Tucker in an interview following his appointment. “I am beyond excited to join the Yuga Labs team and to continue building toward the new era of interoperability and community-empowered growth in the Otherside Metaverse.”

In a statement, Yuga CEO Nicole Muniz revealed the basis for acquiring Tucker. “Spencer brings a passion for and deep knowledge of gaming and shares our vision for the Otherside metaverse,” she said.

Yuga Labs’ Long-Term Vision for Web3 Gaming

As mentioned previously, the position of chief gaming officer is a newly-formed C-suite role at Yuga Labs. This new role, coupled with the recent First Trip demo for Otherside, is a testament to Yuga’s bold long-term vision to expand its scope beyond NFTs. Through a flurry of initiatives that will be rolled out in the coming months, Yuga Labs is determined to show that it is greater than the sum of its parts.

According to Muniz, one of Yuga Labs’ biggest priorities is gaming, even saying it is the company’s “main focus” going forward.

“Yuga today is known most prominently for being the home of Bored Ape Yacht Club, CryptoPunks, and Meebits, but Yuga is more than that. Gaming is one of our main focus areas. We are uniquely situated to revolutionize the way we all think about web3 gaming through core principles such as ownership, utility, community, and storytelling.”

Despite the bear market, Yuga Labs has grown from having only ten employees in January to having over 70 at present. The company is hoping to exceed 100 full-time employees before the year ends. Still, the company has a small team, considering the $450 million it raised through a seed round, which brought it to a whopping $4 billion valuation.
