RTFKT Studios, the creators of the CloneX NFT project, has teased a new collaboration with Nike—the RTFKTxNike AR hoodie—that will be dropping soon.
On Friday, RTFKT Studios, the creators of the CloneX NFT project, teased a new collaboration with Nike that will be dropping very soon. The RTFKTxNike AR hoodie (as seen above) will drop as an NFT on July 21 via a private mint.
Holders of previous CloneX, RTFKT, and Nike NFT collaborations will get first dibs on the hoodies through the private mint. Incidentally, Nike is RTFKT’s parent company. Nike purchased then two-year-old RTFKT for an undisclosed amount in December 2021. The acquisition was brought about by the immense success of the CloneX NFT collection.
“This acquisition is another step that accelerates Nike’s digital transformation and allows us to serve athletes and creators at the intersection of sport, creativity, gaming, and culture,” Nike President and CEO John Donahoe said about the acquisition.
RTFKT x Nike AR Hoodie Private Mint
RTFKT announced the RTFKTxNike AR Hoodie drop through its official Twitter account on Friday.
Based on the announcement, the collaboration will drop on Thursday, July 21, via a private mint. It will include an NFT and forging of a physical product. However, only a select number of CloneX and RTFKT x Nike Dunk Genesis CryptoKicks NFT holders will be granted access to the mint.
RTFKT also shared a teaser video of the RTFKTxNike AR hoodie, which apparently will have enhanced “reality capacities.” While the drop date has been shared, RTFKT is yet to disclose the precise time of the launch. CloneX and RTFKT x Nike Dunk Genesis CryptoKicks NFT holders who wish to take part in the drop must check the official Twitter account of RTFKT for complete details.
More Details about the RTFKTxNike AR Hoodie
The RTFKTxNike AR hoodie is the first physical-plus-digital wearable clothing item that Nike is launching in partnership with RTFKT Studios. The hoodie comes with a near-field communication (NFC) chip, which means the hoodie is trackable using augmented reality (AR). Hence, anyone wearing the hoodie will have the option to wear virtual wings, for example.
RTFKT has not disclosed the price yet, but will probably announce it close to the drop. However, it is speculated that the RTFKTxNike AR hoodie will cost around $250 in Ethereum.
The hoodie drop is not the first time RTFKT fans will have the chance to forge a physical product. Nevertheless, this is the first clothing item beyond the already promised physical sneaker twins. It also appears to be ushering in a new era for Nike. How?
With this collaboration with RTFKT, the groundwork is being laid for how digital fashion play will look when backed by a Web2 brand.
“We haven’t seen a Web2 brand come in the Web3 space in an efficient way,” says RTFKT co-founder Steven Vasilev, adding that RTFKT is consciously staying true to the shifting, quirky ethos that has primarily attracted its community members. “Some people said it would lead to the death of Rtfkt or slow us down, now that we are part of a huge global corporation.”
While some CloneX and Cryptokicks holders were admittedly excited with the news and expressed themselves via fire and heart emojis, many also aired their frustration about the upcoming drop. Some were implying that there is a lack of supply from the collaboration. Moreover, holders of RTFKT-MNLTH NFTs are excluded from the private mint.
