Playboy solidifies its Web3 presence as it collaborates with The Sandbox to launch the Playboy MetaMansion, which will be a gaming, social, and programmed events hub.
Playboy’s first foray into the NFT world was in April 2021, when it released a series of tokenized centerfolds through Nifty Gateway. This time, the American men’s lifestyle and entertainment magazine intensifies its Web3 presence by launching the “MetaMansion.”
The Playboy MetaMansion will be launched in collaboration with The Sandbox and is geared to become a gaming, social, and programmed events hub. Playboy also intends to release future NFT collectibles through the MetaMansion.
The Playboy MetaMansion Upclose
The MetaMansion is leveraging the company’s Playboy Rabbitars NFT project released in April last year. As mentioned in the get-go, it was a collection of 11,953 tokenized centerfolds—bunny avatars—that sold for $800 apiece in October last year.
With the release of the Playboy MetaMansion, holders of the Rabbitars NFTs will be given access to exclusive experiences happening in the virtual mansion. However, Playboy has not released further details about the MetaMansion nor its launch date.
At this time of writing, the floor price for the Rabbitars NFTs is at Ξ 0.19 or about $199, marking an almost 80% decrease in floor prices since the collection was launched last year.
Playboy MetaMansion x The Sandbox
As already mentioned, the iconic raunchy lifestyle brand’s Playboy MetaMansion will have a digital address in The Sandbox Metaverse. It will be a recreation of Playboy’s quintessential mansion in a virtual setting, where users can enjoy a variety of mini-games, social mixers, and scheduled events.
Playboy will release the NFTs related to the MetaMansion in partnership with a new creator platform called Centerfold.
In its announcement, The Sandbox said users would have the opportunity to snap up neighboring NFT land plots to the Playboy MetaMansion later this quarter.
“We’re pleased to bring its rich archive of content into the Metaverse and enable true fans to become virtual neighbors of this iconic brand during a future upcoming LAND sale in Q3 2022,” said Sebastien Borget, Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder of The Sandbox.
As evidenced by The Sandbox’s history, there could be solid demand for the land. Last December, someone paid a whopping $450,000 to be Snoop Dogg’s neighbor in Snoopverse, which also holds an address in The Sandbox.
“Playboy is emblematic for its charm, lifestyle, and entertainment content that has transcended generations and that has already stepped into Web3 with early success,” said Borget.
Although some brands seem to be dipping their toes into NFTs for a quick cash grab, it looks like Playboy is in this for the long haul. After all, the company is launching the Playboy MetaMansion amidst a bear market.
“We’re thrilled to work with The Sandbox and its best-in-class design and development team to build a premium, customized Playboy gaming and social experience in the metaverse,” said Rachel Webber, Playboy’s chief brand and strategy officer, while talking about the launch.
Webber also stated, “The opportunity to create that environment in a way that more people can step into now in a virtual space, and to do it in a really contemporary way is something that we’re really excited to bring to life. Playboy has been at the forefront of innovation in the entertainment, gaming, art, and celebrity industries for close to seven decades, and The Sandbox continues this legacy by providing a dynamic platform for the next generation of creativity.”
Playboy is joining a long list of big names within the fashion and entertainment industries that have collaborated with The Sandbox in one way or another. Among these are Care Bears, Snoop Dogg, Adidas, Warner Music, Deadmau5, The Smurfs, Atari, and The Walking Dead.
