Oceans & Us, a Dubai-based non-profit organization, plans to raise funds to start a worldwide ocean cleanup drive.

Oceans & Us, a Dubai-based startup non-profit organization, announced its plans to generate $1.2 million in funding to start a worldwide ocean cleanup campaign on Sunday.

According to the startup, they will try to raise funds by selling 10,000 generative NFTs. Likewise, the green startup plans to launch a new cryptocurrency by crowdsourcing to raise the necessary funds.

Oceans & Us’s primary goal is to raise awareness concerning global ocean cleanup and raise enough funds to build boats to handle the cleanup drives.

    Plans for the Cleanup Drive

Oceans & Us will be collaborating with 100 brands across the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Middle East that offer sustainable products or solutions. Those who will purchase the NFTs will receive discounts and other benefits from the companies.

To date, the non-profit organization has had talks with the team behind the Qatar World Cup, premier UAE-based retailer Landmark Group, coffee brands with a mission to promote sustainable green practices, solar home solutions companies, and sustainable fashion brands, among others. The talks have been progressive, which is a good start.

Oceans & Us is also working closely with Marakeb Technologies to design autonomous, self-driven boats powered by artificial intelligence (AI). These boats will be used to clear plastic from oceans and rivers.

Marakeb Technologies is a major technology firm based in UAE and is 30% owned by the Abu Dhabi government. If all goes according to plan, the AI self-driven boats will set sail in July this year.

Oceans & Us founder Joel Michael discussed the development in length and said the partnership with Marakeb Technologies and the 100 brands across the Middle East is to unite the community and bring art as a means of communication.

“Sustainability is an ecosystem, and NFTs work as a gateway. Buying an NFT enables people to invest and participate in a hands-on way. The idea is for all of this to sit on the blockchain that is transparent, so every single dollar invested can be seen clearly where it goes,” Michael said.

“The biggest thing we want to solve is transporting plastic we collect back to land so it can be repurposed,” he elaborated further.

He intimated that the government is big with such initiatives; thus, there is no doubt that private market firms will join hands with them in their campaign. “We have seen tremendous support from the UAE and think it’s the epicenter of sustainability in the region,” he said.

    Blockchain Is Making it Possible

The idea behind blockchain is to create something decentralized, immutable, transparent, and completely secure. All these characteristics are what people typically associate with the term “social good.”

Hence, it is not surprising that many firms are thinking about how they can leverage blockchain technology to improve their operations and, at the same time, help others.

Marine biodiversity has been hard hit by overfishing and pollution. In the same vein, climate change threatens to make diseases, storms, and other impacts more severe.

Oceans & Us is joining forces with different partners to create and scale blockchain projects to generate funds to clean the world’s oceans of the millions of tons of plastic in them. Those who will purchase the NFTs will be supporting Oceans & Us and helping the non-profit reach its goal of cleaning up 90% of the plastic pollution harming the oceans.
