E-commerce giant eBay launches a series of NFTs through a strategic partnership with OneOf.
eBay, a global commerce leader connecting millions of buyers and sellers worldwide, has announced its venture into the Web3 and NFT spaces. The company has launched a series of exclusive NFTs through a strategic collaboration with OneOf, a green NFT platform.
“We are excited to partner with eBay, the largest and most trusted e-commerce platform in the world, to introduce NFTs and the power of the blockchain to the community of enthusiasts through a dynamic, user-friendly experience,” said Lin Dai, CEO of OneOf.
With eBay’s global reach and unparalleled inventory and OneOf’s eco-conscious technology, this collaboration will bring a smooth experience to both crypto and non-crypto consumers.
A Closer Look into eBay’s NFT Drop
eBay’s maiden NFT drop, which went live on Monday, features a series of tokenized collectibles showcasing National Hockey League (NHL) legend Wayne Gretsky. The NFT collections show 3D and animated interpretations of Gretsky making a signature move on the ice. These are inspired by Sports Illustrated magazine covers of the iconic hockey player over the years.
“Forty years ago, I was grateful to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated, it was a monumental moment in my life,” said Wayne Gretzky, Sportsman of the Year. “I’m honored to bring this collectible experience to my hockey fans who have followed my career for decades.”
The NFTs will have four different rarity tiers—299 editions of green, 199 editions of gold, 99 editions of platinum, and 15 editions of diamond. The NFT collection is now available on eBay’s marketplace. However, as of the time of writing, the limited edition diamond, platinum, and gold tiers have already sold out for $1,500, $100, and $25, respectively.

The Idea Behind the Collaboration
In a press release, eBay said its collaboration with OneOf, an environmentally-focused NFT platform that supports many “energy-efficient blockchains,” is to provide sustainable NFT collections. eBay had started listing NFTs on its website around the middle of last year, but it didn’t integrate blockchain technology to support marketplace sales.
For this official drop, users will receive redemption links through in-platform messaging or email so they can receive their NFT outside of the platform. eBay used Ethereum scaling platform Polygon to mint the NFTs. It is speculated that the NFTs will be placed on OneOf for secondary trading.
Commenting on the drop, Dawn Block, vice president of collectibles, electronics, and home at eBay, said, “NFTs and blockchain technology are revolutionizing the collectibles space and are increasingly viewed as an investment opportunity for enthusiasts.” Block emphasized that they are seeking to bring NFTs to mainstream collectors worldwide.
“Through our partnership with OneOf, eBay is now making coveted NFTs more accessible to a new generation of collectors everywhere. This builds upon our commitment to deliver high passion, high-value items to the eBay community of buyers and sellers.”
The CEO of OneOf expressed similar sentiments. He also noted that the partnership seeks to make NFTs accessible even to those clueless about crypto.
“You don’t have to be a crypto expert to buy, sell, and collect NFTs. They are bringing transformative Web3 technology to the next 100M non-crypto-native mass consumers,” Dai said.
Additional drops of OneOf’s sports legends NFT series, in partnership with eBay, will occur throughout the year. As with Gretsky’s, the succeeding designs will reinterpret iconic covers of Sports Illustrated with a Web3 twist.
