It looks like a new NFT project is set to give Bored Ape Yacht Club a run for its money as far as cool nautical vessels are concerned. Renowned award-winning yacht designer Gregory C. Marshall recently collaborated with Cloud Yachts to create a custom superyacht by combining the best of two worlds—NFTs and yachts.
Just last month, Marshall and Cloud Yachts partnered to introduce the NFT concept to yacht design and sales. The result was a $95 million NFT of a custom-designed superyacht. Seattle-based shipbuilder Delta Marine will build said design.
However, Marshall’s recent design was minted via OpenSea and was sold last week on the Ethereum blockchain, reportedly to a Texan businessman. The design, a 110-footer costing a whopping $12 million, will be built in real life by Tactical Custom Boats.
A Closer Look into Superyacht NFT
Cloud Yachts is touted as the first digital yacht dealer on the Metaverse. They recently partnered with the world’s number one superyacht dealer, Denison Yachting, to release original artwork created by award-winning yacht designers. Marshall was among these designers.
A Cloud Yachts NFT are limited edition NFTs released in small quantities during special events, particularly yacht shows and award ceremonies. Holders of Cloud Yachts NFTs are given VIP access to exclusive events in the superyacht community like shows, parties, and more. On their official website, the company provides details about this project designed by Marshall.
“Award-winning naval architect Gregory Marshall is pioneering the world’s first NFT superyacht new build project. The client will customize their superyacht in the Metaverse using the first-of-its-kind augmented reality technology,” Cloud Yachts said.
From NFT to the Real Deal
The Superyacht NFTs are representations of contracts for actual builds. Hence, the buyer of Marshall’s NFT will transfer the remaining payment off-chain, and a shipbuilding firm will take care of the actual work. In this case, Tactical Custom Boats of Canada will handle the building process to turn Marshall’s NFT design into a real superyacht.
Regarding this innovative move, the CEO of Tactical Custom Boats, Tim Charles, said, “We are constantly looking for new ways to improve the build experience for our clients. We teamed up with Cloud Yachts to see if we could use NFTs to simplify a complex build process. The first client we presented the opportunity to loved the idea. We are excited to work with the owner, Greg Marshall, and Cloud Yachts on this NFT new build project.”
Tactical will spend the next three years in building the incredible superyacht designed by Marshall. The Superyacht NFT’s buyer will have the option to add some customizations to the superyacht through augmented reality. Upon completion, Cloud Yachts and Tactical Custom Boats will mint a second NFT for the new owner with all the metadata from the build. The owner will also receive his new explorer yacht.
Although Marshall has previously showcased the NFT during past boat shows, he is still reeling from the response his design received. He will be showcasing his hull number two NFT at the upcoming 36th Palm Beach International Boat Show happening from March 24-27, 2022.
