The second-rarest NFT from the popular manga-style Azuki collection has sold on OpenSea for $1.4 million, the highest sale price in the collection’s history.
A tweet posted on Wednesday confirmed the sale of Azuki #9605, the second-rarest manga-style piece from the Azuki NFT collection. It sold on Ethereum-powered secondary marketplace OpenSea for Ξ420.7, or about $1,430,388.
The tweet was posted by the former owner of Azuki #9605, who goes by the Twitter handle @trebooomin. The seller is a member of RedBeanDao, a community known to buy Azuki NFTs frequently. According to the tweet, a certain “Jason,” who goes by the Twitter handle @Bitcoin4Freedom and “jdizzles” on OpenSea, is now the proud owner of Azuki #9605.
It is the highest-ever sale price recorded for any piece in the Azuki NFT collection.
The Azuki NFT Collection
Chiru Labs, a startup based in Los Angeles and run by pseudonym founders HoshiBoy, 2pm.flow, ZAGABOND, and location tba, launched the Azuki NFT collection in January. The four founders claim to have past work experiences in DeFi and at Facebook, Y Combinator, and Google.
The collection consists of 10,000 unique anime avatars that allow its owners to access The Garden, “a corner of the internet where art, community, and culture fuse to create magic.” In a short time since its launch, Azuki has become one of the most popular NFT collections, following in the footsteps of forerunners like Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC).
The Azuki NFT collection’s popularity could be attributed to its founding team’s experience in big tech and DeFi. It is also one of the first projects with an anime theme to go mainstream. What’s more, the Azuki NFT project’s roadmap is quite innovative, offering permanent exclusive physical goods drops and DAO exploration using its own BEAN token.
Azuki’s Imminent Rise to the Top
The Azuki NFT collection has surpassed the $500 million mark in sales volume on OpenSea to date. Its top 10 highest sale prices range from $353,000 and $1.4 million. What makes Azuki different from other NFT collections? RedBeanDAO has this to say:
“Prior to launch, the team also spent time improving ERC-721 — the specification used for the majority of NFTs today on the Ethereum blockchain. They took the source code apart, found the inefficiencies, improved it, and shared it with the world.”
Azuki #9605 sold for Ξ 120, or about $408,002, when RedBeanDAO first purchased it on the secondary market. The $1.4 million sale price holds the record for the most expensive NFT sold from Azuki’s 10,00-strong collection as of this writing.
Even back when the Azuki NFT collection was launched in January with a hefty Ξ 1 mint price, or about $3,400, the collection sold out in three minutes, raising over $29 million. By February, the brand’s transaction volumes reached almost $300 million, solidifying its place as the eighth most traded NFT of all time.
Hence, it is not surprising that social media enthusiasts look at the Azuki NFT collection as a solid competitor to highly-revered collections like BAYC, Cool Cats, and CryptoPunks.
